Sky News Australia has been broadcasting in New Zealand since 1999 and has continued to try to cover stories throughout the country while also giving full coverage to Australian news and Australian perspectives. It has often struggled having to be treated as a media organisation in both countries and having to recognise laws in both countries. Sky News Australia has covered New Zealand news through Television Three and through the new Prime News, a joint venture between Prime New Zealand and Sky News Australia.

Since 1998 Sky News Australia has existed as a cable and satellite television news service dedicated to bringing 'the news on the hour, every hour, and headlines every fifteen minutes, with breaking news as it happens.'

Sky News is equally-owned by three shareholders: the Nine Network, the Seven Network and Britain's bSkyb. Each shareholder contributes a varying selection of current affairs programs and news reports to provide Sky News with an amazing selection of resources. It also uses the resources of the Columbian Broadcasting System and the American Broadcasting Company in the United States, Television Three in New Zealand and freelance New Zealand reporters.
