Overview

Leadership is important in a business. A business rarely does well unless it has effective leaders. There are many different types of leadership, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.

It is important for a business to consider what type of person they want to lead their workers - a good leader will most likely result in more motivated workers.

Leadership Styles

There are four main types of leadership:

  • Autocratic Leadership - An autocratic leader will tell employees what to do without consulting them for their opinions. This may result in a less motivated workforce.
  • Democratic Persuasive Leadership - A democratic persuasive leader will make their own decisions as to what the workforce should do, but will attempt to 'persuade' the workers to accept the decision through discussion and reasoning.
  • Democratic Consultative Leadership - A democratic consultative leader would ask for the opinions of the workforce before coming to a final decision. This sort of leadership normally motivates the workers as they are made to feel more important in the business.
  • Laissez-Faire Leadership - A laissez-faire leader would allow the workforce to make their own decisions on how to complete a task or reach a target. People who use this style of leadership only occasionally make decisions for others.
