Overview

Cables represent the most fundamental part of computing technology - the need to carry electronic signals from one device to another. Cables come in many different forms and shapes, depending on their precise function.

Ribbon Cable

Ribbon cable was, until very recent times, the main type of cable to link a hard drive and a floppy drive to the motherboard or other controller for such devices. It consists of many different individual cables linked together to form a type of ribbon.

Ribbon cable has been superseded in the last two years, although many more 'amateur' hardware enthusiasts will buy the cable to reduce cost. There is a much higher risk of failure in the cable, which was common in PCs up until about five years ago.
