History of the Game

The Battletech was created around 1995-1996. It was designed to place the player in command of armies of Battlemechs and mechwarriors to control and destroy a player's opponent. With many aspects of Magic: the Gathering, the game gained a following quickly. A professional league for the game was formed with it's success.

The downfall of Battletech remains a bit of a mystery. In 1998, the game remained successful and a new set was promised. Crusade, the final set, saw a limited run. The game was discontinued a few months after for no real reason. The popular opinion of it's downfall is contributed to a card game released in 1998 named Netrunner. In this opinion, many people believe that Battletech simply lost funding in order to devote resources to create Netrunner.

Despite the lack of publishing, the Battletech CCG flourished under the lack of support, creating pockets of fans with the reduced prices on boxes, packs and starters. Groups of players devoted to the game try to keep it alive by helping new people to understand it. Even so, Battletech players are quite difficult to find.

History of the Battletech Game World

In the near thousand years humans journeyed into space, five vast empires rose up from the explorations. These empires were known as the Inner Sphere, centered around Earth, or Terra. The Inner Sphere was divided, however, with ruling classes fighting over valuable worlds and resources. These battles lead to the development of the Battlemechs, giant thirty-foot machines with enough firepower to level a small city.

Soon, due to the price of war, the Inner Sphere veered from war into peace. In 2571, the five lords formed an alliance and formed the Star League, with a First Lord and it's own personal army. For nearly two hundred years, the Star League kept the peace. This peace was not meant to last. In 2751, the First Lord died suddenly and left the Star League in the hands of a child, Young Richard Cameron, and a council of regents.

Stefan Amaris then wormed his way into young Richard's heart. In 2766, Amaris assassinated Richard and immediately took control of the Star League. The Star League army's commander, General Aleksandr Kerensky, would not accept Amaris's rule. After a bloody thirteen years, Kerensky emerged victorious, but at a terrible price. The council lords, seeing their chance to rule the Star League, launched their own attacks at the weakened Star League. Ripped apart, the Star League soldiers became mercenaries. Kerensky, however, felt that the Star League should be rebuilt. Eighty percent of the Star League joined him as he left the Inner Sphere.

With the departure of Kerensky came over three centuries of war in the Inner Sphere. The great Houses fighting among each other once more, the Inner Sphere lost priceless technology and made new alliances. The Houses felt, after these wars and battles that they were the greatest enemies they would ever face. Fate was about to prove them very wrong.

Kerensky's followers created a new society among the far edges of space. They developed a rigid caste system in order to produce the perfect warriors. They had but one goal over three hundred years. Their goal was to return to the Inner Sphere and conquer it. They would become saviors of humanity and would rebuild the Star League in their own way. In 3048, the Clans decided to drive at Terra with their powerful Battlemechs and mechwarriors, carving a path of destruction into the Inner Sphere.

With fragile alliances holding the Inner Sphere together, and the Clans continually fighting themselves for the honor of reaching Terra first, all-out war has once again touched the Inner Sphere...
