Poker Strategy

If you sit down at a poker table and just play your cards as they are dealt to you, you will be an overall net loser at poker. Poker is more than the cards you are dealt. Poker is a game of skill and strategy. The more variations you have in your game, the more likely you are to be a winner at any form of poker you chose to play. Learning and implementing a variety of different strategies is the key to becoming a winning poker player.

Mix it Up

There are several different areas of strategy that every good poker player must consider. First, there are the cards you are dealt. If you always play your big hands the same, your opponents will pick up on that and your win rate with big hands will go down. You have to vary your play with good cards.

Hand Selection

The opposite strategy is also a loser. If you always fold bad cards, you will significantly lower the number of hands you can win. Winning is not all about cards, winning is also about strategy and keeping your opponents guessing. Bluffing with bad cards is an element of any good players game. And, of course, there are all those "almost" hands or drawing hands. You will be dealt more drawing hands than good hands in poker and learning the various strategies to play those drawing hands is essential. The more hands you play, the more chances you have to win a pot. Of course playing too many hands is giving away too many opening bets. So how and when to play for the draw is crucial.

Table Image

Strategy is balancing your cards with your knowledge of the other players in the game and with your own image at the table. A player with a tight image has more chance of winning with a bluff then someone who splashes around in a lot of pots. In addition, if you can manipulate players to believe you play the game one way, than you can reverse yourself, confuse them and take down another pot.

Conclusion

Poker is all about accumulating chips, but how you do that is nearly always about the cards and something else. That "something else" is what we call poker strategy. The differing strategies you can employ each and every hand is the key to being an overall winner. Of course, different strategies are found in the different variations of poker.
