This section covers diseases or conditions that involve the blood, including erythrocytes (commonly known as red blood cells or RBC), leukocytes (white blood cells or WBC), platelets, and associated proteins.
Anemias comprise an array of disorders that result in low red blood cell count. This may be due to inadequate synthesis or increased degradation of the cells. These conditions will affect the blood's oxygen carrying capacity, and can lead to ischemia and tissue death. Other blood disorders, such as those affecting coagulation factors, can lead to abnormal affecting clotting factors and regulatory proteins can lead to abnormal clotting, thrombosis, or hemorrhage.
