Stamp collecting is the activity of collecting postage stamps and related products. It is considered to be one of the world's most popular hobbies, and usually involves documenting stamps in special albums or books. Stamp collecting is an aspect of philately, or the study of stamps.
The first philatelist and stamp collector is thought to be John Tomlinson, who started collecting stamps in 1840 on the day after the release of the first stamp, the penny black in Britain.
