Hawkes Bay is an area on the eastern coast of the North Island, including Hawke Bay in the northern half and a coast of isolated beaches in the southern half. The point where the two parts meet, Cape Kidnappers, earns its name from the experiences of the first European settlers to the region.
The region of Hawkes Bay is best known for winemaking and is considered among the three best regions in New Zealand for winemaking. There are over 50 vineyards in the region and a wine trail allows members of the public to visit many of them.
The region's main town, Napier, was struck by an earthquake in the 1930s, but it was rebuilt in the style of art deco, which is now a major claim to fame for the region.
