The European Southern Observatory (ESO) is an astronomical research organisation with participation from Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom. The headquarters is located in Garching, near Munich, Germany. ESO operates two observatories in Chile: La Silla Observatory (LSO) and The Very Large Telescope (VLT).
